Did you know the first Pride month was literally a riot?

Pride month began after the Stonewall uprising of June 1969, when New York's LGBTQIA+ people first protested against ongoing police raids at the Stonewall Inn.

March is Pride month in Ōtepoti and, whether you've been here a while or you're new to town, there are heaps of events on around OP and the city - check out the Dunedin Pride Calendar  and get amongst it.

Why is Pride in different months across Aotearoa New Zealand?

Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington celebrate Pride in March to commemorate the introduction of the Homosexual Law Reform Act in NZ Parliament in March 7, 1985. Auckland celebrates Pride in February each year to make the most of warm summer weather and to work in with local scheduling needs.
