A group of nine Central Otago high school students have been getting out of the classroom and picking up the tools, as they tackle their studies with some practical work.

Otago Polytechnic has partnered with local company Breen Construction to give the ākonga an opportunity to build (together with professional sub-contractors) an 82m², 2-bedroom transportable cottage.

The year 12 students from Dunstan College (Alexandra), Cromwell College, and Wakatipu College (Queenstown) are working on site at Breen’s Cromwell Yard two days a week.

The OSTC students are working towards their BCATS (Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills) Level 3 qualification, with the project offering them hands-on carpentry training in a real-world construction environment.

The group are being mentored by Otago Polytechnic Foundation Learner OSTC lecturer Garry Morton, and Director of Marketing & Communications, Gus Geary, says it's a great project for the young amateur builders.

“This provides real hands-on experience that is unique to the Central Otago area, where we know there is strong industry need for experienced workers.”

“We’re delighted to be working alongside industry experts, and appreciate the collaborative partnership with Breen Construction.”

The teenagers are being guided by experienced professionals including a project manager and health & safety manager from Breen Construction. The company designed the home, sourced materials, and is supporting the build every step of the way.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to support the next generation,” says Lindsay Breen, Managing Director of Breen Construction.

“These young people are the future of our industry, and this initiative gives them the confidence and experience to build something meaningful — literally and figuratively.”

The roof is now on and the window joinery has been fitted, with the completed house expected to be put up for public sale around October 2025.
