Some disabilities, conditions or chronic illnesses are not immediately obvious to others.
For some people, this can make it hard to understand and believe that someone, with a “non-visible” condition genuinely needs support.
That’s why the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme was created – to encourage inclusivity, acceptance and understanding.
At Otago Polytechnic, we believe in creating a welcoming space for everyone. That’s why we’ve joined the Sunflower programme and are training our staff to be able to provide official Sunflower support.
Originally suggested by one of our neurodivergent students, we’re the first polytechnic in the South Island to embrace this programme.
Key facts
- This is a globally-recognised scheme that has been adopted by multiple businesses across the world.
- Someone who needs discrete support can wear a green-branded Sunflower lanyard, badge or wristband. You can choose when to wear this and don’t have to wear this all the time.
- A hidden or invisible disability can be temporary (e.g. broken ankle), situational (e.g. nut allergy), or permanent but not visible (e.g. migraines).
- There is no defined list of hidden disabilities, and you do not have to disclose what your hidden disability is to wear a Sunflower lanyard, badge or wristband.
- You will never be asked what your disability is or why you need support. By wearing a Sunflower item, you are simply signalling that you need support, understanding or additional time. A Sunflower supporter will simply ask, “How can I help you?”
- Sunflower items are free.
- You can collect your Sunflower items from our Student Support desk in The Hub, from our Māori Support Centre, Te Pūnaka Ōwheo (also in The Hub), or from Te Pā Tauira, our Student Village.
- If you have any questions, email studentsuccessdn@op.ac.nz or freephone 0800 762 786 and ask to speak to the Student Support team.
